The Small Business Resiliency Program (SBRP)

supports small business owners

operating in the State of Washington

with business webinars and

in-person programs in Japanese,

and helps them find other resources

such as grants, loans, and study groups

(social networks, websites, podcasts and more!).

In partnership with the Small Business Resiliency Network (SBRN)

of the Washington State Department of Commerce

the Small Business Resiliency Program

of the Japan America Society of the State of Washington

has supported minority business owners of limited English ability

who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Specifically, our program was chosen by the Washington State Department of Commerce to offer support IN JAPANESE to Japanese and Japanese speaking businesspersons.

Explanations and information in Japanese regarding Federal,

State and other public programs offered by the

Federal Small Business Administration (SBA)

such as the PPP and EIDL programs,

and more recently WA Hospitality Grants.

Applicants to these programs can access government support

such as free consulting sessions offered at

public libraries and in virtual meetings.

2. Technical Assistance

と感じる方は多いのではないでしょうか？

Volunteer for JASSW at Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival (Friday, April 10, 2026)

Volunteer with JASSW at the 51st Annual Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival!

The 51st Annual Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival returns to Seattle Center for a full weekend celebrating Japanese and Japanese American culture. Enjoy traditional performances, authentic foods, hands‑on cultural demonstrations, workshops, and more.

The Japan‑America Society of the State of Washington (JASSW) is excited to return this year with two Japan In the Schools (JIS) presentations and an information booth open all weekend.

We’re looking for volunteers to help share JASSW’s mission, promote upcoming events, and highlight our signature programs—Japan In the Schools and the Small Business Resiliency Network. Volunteers will hand out flyers, engage potential members, and support sign‑ups for newsletters and volunteer opportunities.

When: April 10-12, 2026

Where: Seattle Center - Fisher Pavilion (305 Harrison St, Seattle, WA 98109).

*Specific details about the presentation times and booth location will be updated soon.

Volunteer tasks:

Booth volunteers will hand out flyers and share general information about JASSW during 3-hour shifts each day from 11am-2pm or 2pm-5pm.
JIS presentation volunteers will support a Lead Presenter in a 50-minute on Friday, April 10.

Further instruction and information about your role and the event will be sent to registered volunteers prior to the event.

You can volunteer to support the JIS presentation and/or the JASSW booth. If you’d like to volunteer for more than one shift, please register for each shift separately.

An Evening of Reflection, Celebration, and Networking!

The Japan-America Society of the State of Washington (JASSW) invites you to our Annual Meeting 2026 on Friday, April 24th, at the Bellevue City Hall (450 110th Ave NE, Bellevue, WA 98004). Our Annual Meeting is JASSW’s premier networking event, offering a chance to reflect on past accomplishments, learn more about the Society, and connect with our leadership team as we share future goals.

The meeting will be followed by our Spring Gala, featuring a Japanese buffet-style dinner, raffle prizes, and more. Program details will be revealed soon. Join us as we celebrate our shared mission of promoting mutual understanding and friendship between the people of Japan and Washington State by providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and information.

Opening Remarks

Makato Iyori – Consul General of Japan in Seattle

We are excited to welcome the Honorable Makoto Iyori to our Annual Meeting. Iyori joined Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990 and most recently served as Managing Director of the General Affairs Department at the Japan Foundation before being appointed Consul General of Japan in Seattle in 2023.

Mo Malakoutian – Mayor of Bellevue

Mo Malakoutian was elected to the City Council in November 2023, for a four-year term starting in 2024. At his first meeting, his colleagues elected him deputy mayor for 2024 and 2025. His colleagues elected him mayor in January 2026. Mo’s priorities include affordable housing, public safety, efficient transportation options, sustainability and equity. Mo has over 20 years of experience in construction, engineering, academia and the tech industry.

This Year's Passing The Gavel

Yuka Shimizu – 2025-2026 Chair

Yuka Shimizu is the founder of Bellevue Children’s Academy (BCA), BCA Saturday Japanese School, and Willows Preparatory School. She also serves as president of Asunaro and co-chair of Japan Fair. Yuka is on the boards of the Seattle Symphony, Overlake Hospital Foundation, Arboretum Foundation, and is the president of the Urasenke Tankokai Association. A strong advocate for strengthening ties between Japan and Washington State, Yuka has been a member of the JASSW board since 2013. Born and raised in Japan, she moved to Bellevue in 1998 and has three adult children and two granddaughters.

Joshua Ishibashi – 2026-2027 Chair (Candidate)

Josh Ishibashi is a senior infrastructure and construction executive with more than 20 years of experience delivering complex capital programs across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Asia. He currently serves as a Construction Program Manager overseeing major transportation infrastructure delivery in the Pacific Northwest. Josh is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and holds an MBA from the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business. A former U.S. Army officer, he led soldiers for seven years, including a combat deployment.

The Japan-America Society of the State of Washington (JASSW) invites you to our 66th Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, July 20th, 2026 at The Plateau Club. Our foursome scramble golf tournament is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Society, and gives our community an opportunity to connect with other individuals and organizations, while simultaneously supporting the Society through your engagement and enjoying contests, raffles, and more!

This year, we are back at The Plateau Club, a private golf course located in the lush forests of Sammamish, Washington. Not a golfer? Please join us for the Awards Dinner, where there will be opportunities to enjoy the clubhouse and join our Silent Auction and Raffle! Enjoy a great day of golf at The Plateau Club's gorgeous golf course and network with friends and colleagues while supporting the Society and our mission.

The golfer registration fee includes green fee, range balls, a fully equipped cart, lunch, and Tournament Award dinner.

Contributions to JASSW are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. For memberships and event registrations, the tax-deductible amount is the total contribution minus the fair market value (FMV) of any goods or services received.

For this event, the estimated FMV is as follows: $45 for Award Dinner Only, $200 for Individual Golfer, and $800 for Foursome Golfers.

Why join the tournament? The Japan-America Society of the State of Washington is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Thanks to the support of our members and community, our staff, volunteers, and board members have continued to fulfill our mission to promote friendship and understanding between the peoples of Japan and Washington State.

Our Golf Tournament is our biggest summer fundraisers and a popular event for our members and the community. The funds raised from the tournament help support our various education, business, and cultural programming - including:

Our Japan In the Schools (JIS) program, where staff and volunteers bring a hands-on experience of various Japanese cultural and language lessons into the classrooms,
Our America In the Schools program, which runs similarly to our JIS program and provides free curriculum and resources for schools and educators in Japan to teach their students about U.S. culture and schools
Regular events with support from various community organizations to further support the U.S. - Japan relationship
